Are you the Easter Bunny?<\/em> By Janeen Brian, illustrated by Lucinda Gifford and published by Harper Collins begins with a seemingly simple question, one that opens a window into the life of the bilby and invites the reader to follow with wonder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

In the Australian desert, a curious bird encounters a bilby and wide-eyed asks it if it is the Easter Bunny. Bilby gently assures the bird it is not, but leads three birds on an adventure, teaching them about its physical features, behaviour, diet and the vital role it plays in supporting the health and function of the desert landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

This story bounces along in lilting rhyme. Brian uses creative wordplay to describe Bilby\u2019s physical features, such as four scritcher-scratchers and my personal favourite, Bilby\u2019s long, slim bottom-wiggler. Each of these vivid, witty descriptions are accompanied by information about how each feature helps the bilby live in the desert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Gifford has created wonderfully endearing characters and sprinkled humour throughout the story, especially in the lively interactions between the animals. Her meticulous research into the the desert landscape shines through in the warm colour palette chosen and in the careful inclusions of the flowers, grasses and animals that bring the Australian desert vividly to life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

This book would make an excellent addition to the early primary years curriculum to use when exploring and creating informative texts. In fact, this book deserves a place in every library collection, as it raises awareness about the bilby\u2019s plight as an endangered animal. Bilby concludes the story by stating, \u201cI hope I am here to stay,\u201d the message resonates long after the final page is turned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
