Peter Carnavas has crafted another story, Kid, that effortlessly weaves itself into your heart. This story, published by UQP, is brimming with adventure, has all the hallmarks of a timeless classic including memorable, endearing characters (in this case all animals) bursting with personality and charm, a courageous hero, Kid, a young miniature goat, timeless and relatable themes of friendship, family, belonging, courage and following your dreams. Carnavas’ signature storytelling is full of heart, emotional depth, imagination and feels both familiar yet unforgettable.
Kid, a goat small in stature, big in heart and full of hopes and dreams, is the only goat living on the farm. His parents Buck and Bess have legendary status as they bravely chased after a fox and in their pursuit, fled to the mountain. Audrey, a hen, quite fittingly takes on a mother hen role to Kid as she is nurturing and protective of him. Through Audrey’s vivid and embellished storytelling Kid comes to learn about his brave parents. Audrey keeps their memory alive in his young mind. Harriet, a pig, is a close friend, they enjoy conversations and each other’s company. Ma, a Maremma sheepdog guards and patrols the farm. She establishes Farm Law which forbids any animal who leaves the farm to return because of the threats and danger they may bring back. Ma is not at all fond of Kid, not that Kid has ever wronged Ma, but Kid’s presence stirs a resentment and scrapes at an old wound.
Driven by a dream to be reunited with his parents, Kid formulates a bold plan to leave the farm and venture into the wild, knowing he will be exiled. But first he must develop the skill to jump the farm fence. Kid demonstrates utter determination and resilience as he practices relentlessly. The mission is not just important; it is personal and this fuels and helps him find the courage deep inside. The stakes are high and this sees Kid’s determination turn into something unbreakable.
Kid knows this mission will be risky, but what he did not know was that his loyal friends Audrey and Harriet will be accompanying him into the wild to conquer the mountain. Each of them leaves their safe home behind with the knowledge that returning is not an option.
The journey to and up the mountain will have readers cheering for Kid and on the edge of their seats, holding their breath, as Kid and his dear friends have several hair-raising encounters on their quest.
This is a perfect story to read aloud to children 8+. The chapters are short, the storytelling compelling and the figurative language adds to the utterly engaging reading experience. Carnavas has included a charming illustration in each of the chapters that capture the action, emotions or journey the characters are on. This story is a gateway to conversations about family and what that looks and feels like. It invites readers to consider what defines family, is it blood relatives or does it relate to the people who show up, care for and choose you. The concept of Farm Law might inspire readers to explore the issue of biosecurity and what this means to the animals. The book also raises questions about rules and dreams, voiced by Audrey who asks whether it’s more important to follow the rules or your dreams. There are numerous moments that encourage readers to pause, reflect and consider the values or themes of loyalty, identity, responsibility and the courage it takes to choose your own path. Kid is an excellent example of what genuine friendship sounds, looks and feels like, it captures the green flags of friendship.
