Hill End Gold by Sue Whiting is the third book in the Our History series published by Walker Books. This historical fiction novel transports the reader back to the sights, sounds, dangers and way of life for a community gripped by gold fever in the booming gold rush town of Hill End in 1872.
The story is told through the voice of the protagonist, Alfie Wilson. Readers are immediately immersed into Alfie’s world and that of his family, bringing to life this period of Australian history. Readers feel Alfie’s sense of hope as gold fever surges through his veins and he excitedly dreams about his family becoming the Wealthy Wilson’s. Walking in Alfie’s shoes gifts the reader the ability to experience the sights, sounds and feelings of Alfie’s family and the community living in Hill End in the early 1870s.
After purchasing a share in a mine, Alfie’s family suddenly and quite unexpectedly leave their family farm and everything they know for an adventure to strike it rich in Hill End. Pa is of the firm belief that fortune favours the bold and the risk will pay off. However, some family members have their doubts and the move comes as a massive sacrifice to them. For Louisa, Alfie’s sister, the enticing allure of gold means that her dreams of becoming a pupil teacher are dashed as she must now cease her education and stay at home to help Ma. Alfie’s younger brother, Tommy, sees the move as an adventure while Ma who is resourceful, resilient and adaptable is highly concerned. She has the burden of managing a very tight budget and can no longer rely on the farm produce to feed her family, instead resorting to store credits and creative solutions to stretch ingredients. Ma also fears her family falling ill as the overcrowding and poor sanitation is seeing children struck with deadly diseases. As more reports surface of injuries and even deaths working in the mines Ma questions the risk.
To compound the family’s issues, Pa discovers that the man he trusted and to whom he handed over their entire savings, was deceitful. The promised mine is nothing more than an empty venture. Forced to make ends meet, Pa takes long shifts with a mining company, facing dangerous conditions for little more than subsistence wages.
Alfie is driven by his father’s sentiments that fortune favours the bold and believes his father has given up on the dream. Alfie takes matters into his own hands and the events that transpire will have readers on the edge of their seats.
Central to this story is Alfie’s gradual understanding about the difference between hope and reality. He learns that chasing a dream at any cost can strip away what really matters. Driven by the frenzy of the gold rush, he becomes obsessed by the promise of striking it rich, pushing himself into perilous situations. Through hardship, betrayal and the reality of the mining world, Alfie learns that real treasure isn’t found underground, but in the steadfast loyalty of friends and the enduring strength of family.
